As we travel around Turkey, we always boomerang back to our home base - Izmit. This is where Mom lives. It is about an hour east of Istanbul, on the Maramara Sea.
If you try to find information about Izmit on the internet, you'll mostly likely be asked if you meant to type "Izmir". Once you convince the computer that yes, you really mean "Izmit", you'll get a lot of information about the devastating 1999 earthquake. Much of the city is new because of this.
Mom's apartment is on one of the hills, about a 10 minute bus ride from downtown where she works.
She works at Wall Street Institute, teaching English to adults.
The teachers and students at the school are wonderful and we've made good friends. When we're with them, I'm involved in conversation and laughter, and haven't taken many pictures. I need to give Hannah the camera! I plan to dedicate the last post of the blog to them.
