Istanbul is categorized into three locations - Old Town, European, and Asian. We're staying in Old Town, and to get to Izmit, we had to take a ferry to the Asian side. This post is on our exploration of the European section.
We crossed from Old Town to the European side on the Galata Bridge. It's a double decker bridge, with restaurants on the bottom/water level and a road/tram way on top.
We walked past the Dolmabahce Palace and Museum (we'd seen the water side of it on our Bosphorus cruise).
We caught a taxi ("taksi") to Yildiz Park. Jamie and Corrie recommended we check the park out and have tea ("chay") at one of the pavilions. And so...
Besides tea, we also had manti (lovely meat stuffed dumplings in yogurt sauce) and kebabs. A woman at the pavilion gave us a ride in her car back to Kabatas station. She was a sweet lady who teaches special education (a Turkish Rachel!), and we wish her many blessings and safe travels for her presentation in Israel this week, and to the United States (University of Georgia) to live next year.
From the Kabatas station, we went to Taksim Square...
...and then walked istiklal Avenue.
Hannah enjoyed a Turkish ice cream experience! It's a fantastic game, where the ice cream vendor takes a very long time to give you your ice cream, pretending he'll give it to you and then taking it away using all kinds of fancy tricks.
We ended the day after seeing Galata Tower, though it had closed so we didn't get to climb it.
